Tips for Staying Motivated

The subject of motivation is a complex one. It is that intangible variable in every person's make up which can ebbs and flow significantly in a very short period of time.

No matter what job you have, what responsibility you have for leading others, there will be moments when your own energy drops. The challenge of motivating yourself is key to your own success and is too important to be left to chance. Here are some tips to help you ensure that your own motivation stays strong and inspires others.

1. Spend Time on Yourself

Some talk about work/life balance others now make the point that there is only life. Whichever your point of view, you are the only one who can direct, change and drive what you really do. Spending time on yourself is an essential activity to focus your thinking, boost your energy, decide on what is important for you.

2. Choose Personal Targets as well as Business ones

At work you will constantly seek to achieve goals. If they are well identified you will be able to reach them in manageable and observable steps. These will help you to not only monitor your progress but also critically retain belief and motivation.

Set yourself some targets for your life away from work to give yourself that same benefit of purpose. Through taking up that hobby, playing an instrument everyday or whatever target you have, you will give yourself the fulfilment of success in personal activities and help to maintain your own motivation.

3. Celebrate Successes

As you achieve something why not celebrate that. It might be a cup of coffee, it could be a large and public celebration, but recognising that you have achieved goals and targets is important. It helps to cement the positive feeling in your mind, to make the event memorable and keep your motivation to take on new challenges.

4. Stay in the Moment

Staying in the moment means focussing on what you are doing at that moment in time and avoiding distractions which will cause you to fail or underperform. Used by many sports men and women, this activity is a technique for improvingg their performance and with that success, their motivation to carry on.

5. Empower Others

Don't take on all jobs while others sit back. Delegate work and empower those people to make a difference. Not only will they be more satisfied but it will spread your load and repay you in time for other things.

6. Speak to Positive People

It is practically impossible to only surround yourself with positive people, but you have the control over who you speak and listen to. Choose positive people and don't waste unnecessary time letting negative influences change your thinking. This doesn't mean ignoring bad news but does affect the way you will approach and come through it.

7. Get creative

Allocate some time to creative activity. Let your creative side free to explore the world you occupy and don't be afraid to dream. Many of the greatest achievements in the world have come from people who have allowed themselves to rise above everyday work and let their creativity and dreams take them forward.

8. Get a Mentor

Identify somebody, or bodies, in whom you have trust and seek their advice. 'A problem shared is a problem halved', can be a real truth with a mentor. They have the opportunity to stand back and see real issues and provide focussed support which will help to keep you going.
