Welcome to Decisive Views, keeping you up-to-date with our news every month...
This month’s Decisive Views Newsletter takes a look at the challenge of focusing people to deliver top level performances, and the importance of governance as well as our monthly book review.
Focus on the Moment
There are always more tasks than resources or days in the week. Pressure from multiple directions is a fact of life for everybody whether they are a student, run a family, a business, or a team. So how do top performers manage?
There is no secret to what they do, they focus on the moment. It’s a simple idea but a real challenge to do consistently. It requires the resilience and focus to prevent interruptions, idle moments or other thoughts from distracting you. In short it means concentrate on whatever you have chosen to do and make the best job of each action. Let the actions add up to achieve the result you wanted.
The leadership challenge this month is, therefore, to think about your workforce and identify how distractions can be removed or managed out, and critically how your people can be motivated to stay in the present and Focus on the Moment.

Excellence in Leadership Workshop
At the start of May John Collicutt presented Decisive Operations’ latest taster event, Excellence in Leadership. With the focus on identifying key skills and tasks required to deliver that extra leadership edge to provide real business advantage, the workshop concentrated on the requirements of a team and leadership responsibilities.
In today’s business environment the importance of strong leadership and the competitive edge that can give are clear. Dealing with setbacks, uncertain markets and nervous stakeholders are just some of the challenges you or your leaders are likely to have to face.

The Value of Governance
Our elected representatives are in trouble. Bankers are still being criticised, and at the heart of both is the lack of or failure in proper oversight and insufficient governance.
The value of active, appropriate governance is most clearly highlighted when things go wrong and that is often too late. There is no absolute mathematical answer to how much focus and effort any company should pay to its governance but the message is clear, all organisations must ensure their house is in order.
One of the primary ways to achieve this is to put in place a process to consider and test existing governance arrangements. If you are thinking about that then there are 5 principles you might consider:
- The role of the assessors – whoever looks at your arrangements needs to consider the comprehensiveness of assurances, and their reliability and integrity.
- Scope of their responsibility – define the scope of their work, if only to make your organisation clear as to what will be considered.
- Independence and objectivity – each assessor needs to understand their role and be free to conduct that independently and with complete objectivity.
- Skills – do the assessors have the skill set to conduct their job.
- Communication – do your assessors have effective lines of communication with the Executive, CEO and Board members.

Rudi Giuliani’s book “Leadership” gives a very readable account of the challenges involved in leading a major American city, New York. He looks at all of the requirements of leadership, which so many other books also touch, but goes the extra step of describing how these were actually translated into definable actions and measureable results. |
